The Republican primary nears its conclusion

As of Wednesday, May 4th, John Kasich joined Ted Cruz in suspending his bid for the presidency, leaving Donald Trump the only Republican candidate in the race, and the presumptive nominee.

It came as a surprise to most people, but Ted Cruz, who was in second place in the Republican presidential race, dropped out on Tuesday. A crushing defeat at the hands of Donald Trump in the state of Indiana, where Trump earned 57 delegates,  cleared the path for Trump and ended the race for Cruz. Ted Cruz stated that he would remain in the race until the end of the primary elections, but he decided to call it quits long before that date.

During his suspension speech, Cruz said, “We are competing to the end as long as we have a viable path to victory, which we no longer have.”

When Ted Cruz dropped out Tuesday night, John Kasich had no shot at catching up to Trump. While everyone knew he had little to no chance of winning, Kasich was not ready to quit. Not until Kasich got on a plane on Wednesday and experienced a change of heart. According to CNN, he then contacted four of his closest friends and said, ‘My heart is just not in this anymore.” Kasich then decided he needed to do what was necessary.

With both Cruz and Kasich dropping out, Donald Trump is now the presumptive Republican candidate for the presidential race. “I think John is doing the right thing,” stated Trump. Trump also added that he is possibly interested in making Kasich his running mate, but is also considering others, such as Chris Christie and Ben Carson. On June 7th, the Democratic candidate will be chosen and Trump will know who he will run against in the 2016 presidential race.
