The Naugatuck Police Department is going pink for breast cancer awareness for the month of October 2018. The officers are raising money to donate to the Susan G. Komen foundation for the fight against breast cancer.

The Naugatuck Police union is calling it “Get Your Pink On!” fundraiser for Susan G. Komen, a non-profit organization that wants fights breast cancer. For every $100 raised in the fundraiser a Naugatuck police officer gets to switch a uniform patch over to a pink patch for the month of October.

School Resource Officer Rebecca St. George mentioned how it’s a friendly competition between the department’s three shifts.

The fundraiser started in July. The goal was set at $6,000, which would be enough to cover every officer at their department. Almost $4,900 has been raised.

The fundraiser ended September 15, which gave every officer enough time to have their pink patches sewn on.

Donations of any size are welcome to be made through the Susan B. Komen website. You can get your own pink naugatuck police department badge for a donation of $50.

The officers are donating everything to The Susan B. Komen website and using the union’s own money to pay for the patches. Everyone does their donations online so no money is donated to the police department.

“We wanted to do something that affected everybody, the community as a whole, and i think everybody can pretty much say they know somebody or somebody in their family has been affected by breast cancer or close friend, or friends mom or friends aunt stuff like that,” said Officer St. George.

Plymouth Police Department has been doing this for awhile, so the Naugatuck union president adapted the idea from them.
