Selena Gomez receives a new kidney
On September 14, international pop star Selena Gomez posted a photo via Instagram of herself alongside her close friend, Francia Raisa, in a hospital bed. She announced that she had undergone a kidney transplant over the summer.
The caption of her post reads, “I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.”
Fans of Gomez quickly flooded Instagram with their reactions to the announcement, writing supportive comments and posts.
“I was very shocked, when I woke up. I was so tired and weak. I was scrolling through Instagram and I saw her post and I was in disbelief. Selena dying has always been a fear of mine recently so knowing that she almost died made my heart shatter,” posted one fan.
Raisa also posted the same photo via Instagram shortly after Gomez. “I am beyond grateful that God would trust me with something that not only saved a life, but changed mine in the process,” she posted.
Several of Gomez’s friends and family showed their support and love as well.
“This picture is one of the most breathtaking images that will live with me forever. We survived from all the love, prayers, and God.” mother of Gomez, Mandy Teefey, states in her Instagram caption regarding the announcement.
Gomez was diagnosed with Lupus back in 2013 and has been battling with it ever since. This disease is chronic inflammatory and makes the patients’ immune systems attack their bodies’ organs and tissues. It affects joints, kidneys, the brain, blood cells, and the heart.
“I’m in chemotherapy. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.” Gomez says in an interview with Ellen Degeneres in October 2015.
She continues to fight the disease and has had a safe and successful recovery after her kidney transplant.
During her recovery, Gomez is temporarily living in New York City for the next two months filming her movie directed by Woody Allen. Her collection with Coach also released earlier this month as well. It’s safe to say, Gomez is better than ever.
