The animals of Harvey receive help

On Friday August 25th, Hurricane Harvey, a category 3 hurricane flooded parts of Texas and Louisiana. Many families had to evacuate, which caused over 2,500 displaced animals to fend for themselves.

From cats and dogs, to horses and cows, there were many animals deserted during the storm. Many were rescued later by courageous and humane companies such as Southwest Airlines, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals of Texas (SPCA), and American Humane Society. Many others were rescued by other victims of the hurricane.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty (SPCA) in Texas is providing support to pets that that were greatly impacted by the danger of Hurricane Harvey.

They are evacuating animals to their shelters, finding abandoned animals and raising funds to feed and shelter the animals until their reunion with their owners.

Southwest Airlines has donated shelters, and their own time to save hundreds of homeless animals facing euthanasia.

Southwest Airlines flew animals from Houston, Texas to San Diego, California where people took initiative to adopt the neglected pets driven out by Harvey.

While  Harvey hit a couple of weeks ago, the long-lasting effect of the flooding remain. People continue to struggle to live in their houses but cannot help their pets.

While driving, Aaron Jayjack was taking a quick stop for gas when a dog jumped into his jeep during the devastating flooding in Rudge, Texas. Jayjack stayed with and cared to the animal until reuniting Cash with his worried family.

In another tale, Lester Marrow was persuaded to evacuate his farm home during Hurricane Harvey’s arrival in Texas. Marrow was hesitant when it came to leaving his animals, but his livestock were too big to transport. After the hurricane, Lester Morrow returned home to see his pot-bellied pig, Patty.

“All of a sudden out of nowhere, damn pig starts waddling towards me,” Morrow said.

Along with the pig, several horses and a donkey also survived the hurricane.

Neighboring states have volunteered to help families with pets affected by Hurricane Harvey, they also contributed to the rescuing of animals for Hurricane Irma.
