Children showing off their Halloween costumes

Halloween is the one time of year when anyone can be anything or anyone else. We can become our dreams.

Until, of course, someone always has to ruin the party.

So, Halloween is fun but there’s always that one costume at the party that makes everyone uncomfortable – that throws the whole feng shui off.

It is one thing to admire Pocahontas during childhood, but appropriating a culture be dressing as her is disrespectful.

Cultural appropriating is gimmicking another cultural traditions; in this case,  dream catchers, which are taken very seriously in Native American culture.

Another example would be including stereotypical “tequila man,“ a costume which includes a sombrero and cultural Spanish pattern poncho and fake mustache.

According to People,  Kim Kardashian’s robbery incident in Paris is being mimicked; the costume includes a rope to tie around wrists and mask to cover mouth. Events like robbery can be scaring and life changing. They should not be mimicked.

According to Washington Post, Anne Frank Halloween costumes are being sold on Halloweencostumes.com for  25$ not including shipping.

The costume comes with an outfit that an average girl would wear in the 1930s and 40s. The costume was listed under  “World War II Evacuee Girl.“ After all the feedback , the costume was taken down followed by an apology from the company.

“We sell costumes not only for Halloween but for many uses outside of the Halloween season, such as school projects and plays,” [said Ross Walker Smith, a spokesman for the company]. “We offer several types of historically accurate costumes — from prominent figures to political figures, to television characters.” The apology was posted in New York Post.

Racism should be taboo no matter what day it is.  According to Facebook, William Filene, 25 , dressed in blackface as Trayvon Martin in a grey hoodie with a red stain to indicate blood while Greg Cimeno, 22 ,wore a neighborhood watch t-shirt and suggested a gun with his fingers pointed at Filene’s head.

Imitating a tragic death of a young black man when our country is going through such a divisive issues as police brutality is horrible.

Just because it’s Halloween and you want to bring your imagination, rules still apply .
