Texas superintendent resigned after criticism received for racist comment

A Texas school superintendent, Lynn Redden, resigned after he criticized the Houston Texans quarterback in a racist Facebook post from September 17, 2018. Following the game, Redden updated his status calling out quarterback Deshaun Watson based on his most recent performance.

“That may have been the most inept quarterback decision I’ve seen in the NFL. When you need precision decision making you can’t count on a black quarterback,” the post claimed.

According to Redden, he thought the statement was being sent in a private message, but in reality, it was posted on the Houston Chronicles page.

He deleted the post shortly after, but it still managed to catch the attention of the school district. They took action very quickly, holding a board meeting on the same day.

On Saturday, September 22, 2018, Redden resigned from his 12-year position as the superintendent.

Head coach Bill O’Brien made comments, calling Redden’s words “ignorant and idiotic statements.

Despite Redden’s cruel statements, Watson responded to the situation in a more positive way.

“But I’m all about love, [so] I don’t focus on [any] of that. I love all people. And that’s what I focus on. It’s part of life. I can’t control other people and what their beliefs are. I can control what I can control, so I just focus on me, and that’s it.”

Redden later stated in a letter to the Onalaska Independent School District that his comment was “wrong and inappropriate.”
