Over the last few weeks, the NFL has received negative backlash from their not-so-subtle publicity of the new couple of 12-time Grammy winner, singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift, and 2-time Super Bowl champion, Travis Kelce.
Swift and Kelce have been rumored to be in a relationship since late July 2023, when Kelce stated on his podcast New Heights that he had recently attended the popstar’s “Eras Tour“ and wanted to meet her and give her a friendship bracelet, a popular tradition in the singer’s fandom, with his number on it.
Over the month of October, Swift has been spotted at numerous NFL games cheering on Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs. The NFL saw their opportunity to engage all the “Swifties” that have been tuning in to their games by repeatedly showing Swift, who has been seated in a box, alongside Kelce’s parents and some of her closest friends.
Football fans started to notice this pattern and were quick to take it to social media. “I’m actually so mad at Swifties making this week’s tickets more expensive… like you’re gonna spend $200 on a football ticket to maybe catch a glimpse of a singer?” said @rivtakesflight on X formally known as Twitter.
On October 2nd, just after Taylor’s first appearance at the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs game, New York Giants fans and Seattle Seahawk fans joined together in booing the singer’s upcoming Eras Tour movie advertisement despite the singer’s missing presence at the MetLife stadium.
Fans had speculations and fears that Swift would be a jinx for Kelce’s career, relating to when Tony Romo, a quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, entered a relationship with Jessica Simpson, a famous singer, in 2007. Simpson would show up to Romo’s games wearing his jersey, which ended up “jinxing” him into performing horribly according to fans.
I interviewed a fellow NHS Swiftie on how she felt about the situation. “Football fans need to mind their own business and calm down and let Swifties have fun. we’re not hurting them.“
However, this is not the situation for Swift and Kelce, as Kelce has been performing greatly, scoring many touchdowns in Swift’s presence and making amazing catches and plays.
Neither Swift nor Kelce have made any sort of comment on the negativity, as the pair seem to be cozying up to each other and appear very happy when in each other’s presence.
Although many football fans have made their negative thoughts known, the opinions on the relationship’s publicity is all over the place. Some fans claim that they don’t mind it, some feel that it’s a bit much, some can’t stand it, and some are so here for it.
