Rising in popularity in recent years, pickleball is a game that blends bits of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Begun as a backyard game and as a way to pass time in the 1960s, the sport has evolved into the mainstream, leading players of all ages and backgrounds to fall in love with it.
One of pickleball’s primary qualities is its very accessible and simple nature. The game is played in a smaller court than tennis, with a net closer to the ground, and uses a perforated plastic (usually neon) green ball and solid paddles. This makes the game easier for all ages and any skill level of players to pick up and enjoy. The simplicity of the rules and smaller playing area reduces the physical demand on the body compared to tennis. The low-impact nature of pickleball also prevents the risk of injury, appealing to a wider segment of the population.
The media display and promotion media has engaged a significant part in pickleball’s advance to fame. Growing coverage on sports networks, social media platforms, and celebrity endorsements has elevated the sport into the spotlight. Well known tournaments and professional leagues have also played part to its visibility, showing off the game’s appeal to a bigger audience. For a long time now, Leonardo DiCaprio, star of numerous films over the past twenty years, has been known to organize charity tournaments, inviting other celebrities and athletes to play in matches together while raising money for good causes. He says that he plays every morning. He has also shared his experiences and passion for the sport through interviews and social media, motivating millions of his followers to give pickleball a chance.
Here in Naugatuck, pickleball is popular among faculty and students alike. Jennifer Stone, a Naugatuck Educator and advisor for Greyhound Nation, an organization that promotes leadership and community service through athletics, has sponsored a fundraiser in town called “Pickleball Sundays.” Those new to the sport can learn to play, and experienced players can have fun for a great cause. Details and dates are included in the graphic above this story. When asked, Stone commented that “Pickleball is a great way to exercise and socialize with friends! Plus we can make some money for Greyhound Nation, it’s a win-win!! Not to mention that it’s one of the fastest-growing sports.”
The cultural shift to more active lifestyles allows pickleball’s rise to fame to be reflective of a bigger cultural shift toward this trend. As large amounts of people seek activities that increase physical fitness and social inspirations , pickleball fits right in–its focus puts fun over competition.
