Class interrupted as accidents plague the high school

NAUGATUCK, CT — On Thursday, October 20th, a transformer on Cherry Street blew out around 9:00 am causing a power surge at Naugatuck High School. For about ten seconds lights and various other electronics flickered on and off before completely blacking out for about fifteen seconds.

While this outage was not exactly damaging it was a disturbance for a vast majority of the school. Nicole Diaz, Naugatuck High School senior, said that the event was “scary”.

“I was just doing my work. I wasn’t exactly expecting the lights to go out”, said Diaz.

In addition to this occurrence another incident, this time involving a gas-like odor, caused an interference the following morning before first period classes.

The school was evacuated early Friday morning when a “gas smell” was reported. The fire department was called and the odor was investigated over the course of approximately forty-five minutes.

While the odor’s source turned out to be a simple oven in the culinary kitchen the fact that forty-five minutes were taken from classes and there were two incidents in as many days still stands.
