Moonlight upsets La La Land

The Academy Awards is an award ceremony hosted by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy Awards are also called what we know as the ‘Oscars.’

Once a year this ceremony us held to celebrate the achievements within the film.

The Oscar award ceremony first started on May 16, 1929 at a private dinner function in the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel. There was a total of 270 people and there were only 15 statues presented to all kinds of artists. The ceremony was only 15 minutes long when today they can go on for hours. The first ceremony was broadcast on the radio in 1930 and televised for the first time in 1953.

Since the ceremony first started in 1929 there are more than 200 countries that televise it such as, the USA, Canada, India, Mexico, Japan, and Scandinavia.

This year the 89th award ceremony will be on Sunday February 26, 2017. This year it will be the 89th ceremony. The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theater Hollywood , Los Angeles , California. The host for this years Oscars are Jimmy Kimmel.

There are many nominations this year for the ceremony. The different nomination categories include, best picture, best actor, best actress, best director, best supporting actress, best foreign language film, best supporting actor, best animated feature film, best original song, best original screenplay, best original music score, best writing and adapted screenplay, best film editing, best cinematography, best animated short film, best visual effects, best live action short film, best sound mixing, best production design, best documentary feature.

The top five categories are best picture, best actress in a leading role, best actor in a leading role, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress.

The nominations for best picture are Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by The Sea, and Moonlight.

The movie that has the highest nominations for best picture is La La Land. The two main actors are Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. La La Land  is about two people who are drawn together common desire to do what they love. Mia (Emma Stone) is an aspiring actress and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a dedicated Jazz musician. As success mounts the couple are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

The classic love story has the highest nominations for best picture in this years 89th Academy Award ceremony.

The nominations for best actress in a leading role for this years Academy Awards are Isabelle Huppert, Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, and Meryl Streep.

The  nominations for best supporting actress are Viola Davis, Naomie Harris, Nicole Kidman, Octavia Spencer, and Michelle Williams.

The nominations for best actor in a leading role are Casey Affleck, Andrew Garfield, Ryan Gosling, Viggo Mortensen, and Denzel Washington.

The nominations for best actor in a supporting role are Mahershala Ali, Jeff Bridges, Lucas Hedges, Dev Patel, and Michael Shannon.
