A 19 year old man in Vallejo, California, walked miles to and from work, caught the Benecia Police Department’s attention. Jourdan Duncan would get up early and walk from his parents’ home in Vallejo, to Benecia, taking him two hours each way.

Last September, Duncan caught Cpl Kirk Keffer attention as he saw him walking every day to work. Soon after that, Cpl Keffer gave him a ride home and learned his whole story. Duncan had just graduated from high school and had a job at Pro-Form Laboratories, where he worked from 3p.m until around midnight. He was working to save up for college and fix his broken car. Rather than asking for his co-workers to give him a ride, he decided to walk.

Keffer, inspired by this young man’s story, approached his police department and the Benecia Police Officers’ Association and all together gave Duncan a bike. After receiving the bike, Duncan said, “I was like, wait, what? Is this some kind of trick?” There’s more, the officer’s did not stop there. They started a GoFundMe campaign to raise some money for Duncan to fix his car and the company raised over $42,000 in four months.

Keffer said,“We would like to acknowledge your hard work and dedication for what you do and setting the example for kids your age.” Keffer also stated the outpouring love everyone in the police department had for Jourdan Duncan and what an amazing person he was. With the money he received, he purchased himself a used Volkswagen Passat for $2,900, and the rest he put in the bank.

Duncan started taking classes at Solano Community College, so he can follow in the footsteps of some of his relatives in becoming a California Highway Patrol Officer.

According to the Washington Post, Duncan stated, “It’s something I’ve been interested in since high school. A lot of my family members, they’re in law enforcement,” Duncan said. “Due to a lot of people thinking that there are bad cops out there, I want to prove that all cops aren’t bad — which is true, due to what just happened to me.”

“I’m just super proud of him. He could have went so many different ways with that money,” Keffer said. “He’s got a bright future ahead of him. I just hope that he continues down this path.”
