Twenty-six dead in a tragic shooting in Texas

Stephen Willeford

On Sunday November 5th, a 26 year old shooter opened fire around noon at Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church in Texas, resulting in the death of 26 and injury of  another 20.

During a normal Sunday mass, the events that unfolded could not have been planned on by any of the victims in a million years. Nobody afflicted by the events will ever be the same.

The rampage ended in deaths of those ranging in age from an unborn child to a 77 years old man. There were a total of 46 people hit, 26 of them have died. The others that were in the church did not get hurt but an exact count on how many were in attendance at the church is unknown. Four percent of the town’s population is now gone due to the attack, but hundreds more feel that loss.

The tragedy was ended by a two good citizens, one man who started to fire at the shooter, Stephen Willeford 55, slowed and even stopped the attacks being made on the church and the other, Johnnie Langendorf, saw what was going on and decided to pursue the criminal Devin Kelly,  who was later found dead not too far from the church, in his truck with  what first responders believed was a self inflicted fatal gunshot wound. An autopsy will decide the exact cause of death.

The attacker was a former member of the Air Force who was dishonorably discharged for domestic abuse. In further detail to his discharge, he would allegedly hit his step child and his wife and was arrested for those charges. Those who knew him during his time in military made notice that he was very dark and enclosed in his mind and not too social.

“I think everybody should have their right to carry, but there’s always messed up people in the world that will do bad things no matter what the rules are, murders and other crimes are illegal but they still happen, it’s unfortunate but it’s a part of the world we live in,” said reporter Matthew Polek when asked if gun control could have affected the situation.

Although his motive is unclear and likely to be unsolved due to the shooter’s death, the uncle of the shooter made public on Facebook that he never could have believed Devin Kelly would have done such a heinous act.

Statements have also connected Kelly to the church through his ex wife’s mother. The former mother in law had been attending the church long before Kelly had connections to her daughter. So many theorize this is why he attacked the church – to hurt one person, his mother in law.
