A Chandler, Arizona woman, 59, was arrested for strangling her own mother, 80, on the evening of Tuesday, January 16, for not letting her borrow her car when she asked.

The Chandler Police Department  released a news statement said that Elizabeth Ann Ramirez called the police.

Her mother was pronounced dead at approximately 1:30 p.m.

When the police arrived at the scene, Ramirez led them to the body of her mother, identified by the police as Berneta Gutierrez.

Ramirez told the police that she just “snapped” after a huge fight with her mother because she didn’t let her use the car. The police said that Ramirez is mentally ill.

According to the police statement released Wednesday, Ramirez also told the 911 dispatcher that she wouldn’t perform CPR to try to revive her mother and when asked if her mother was dead, Ramirez replied, “I hope so.”

Court documents obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix show that Ramirez was arrested for DUI a day before the deadly incident. She’s since been booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count of second-degree murder with bond set at $1 million.

Ashley Pinhero, who has lived next door to Gutierrez for three years, told FOX 10 that this crime was “shocking.”

“It’s really sad because, you know, somebody who could do that to their own mother, considering the circumstances especially,” she said.

Ramirez has been jailed on suspicion of second-degree murder. Online court records don’t list an attorney who could comment on her behalf.

The investigation continues.
