An Oregon woman is sentenced to 21 years for illegal child care operation

January Neatherlin, 32, had ran an illegal child care operation called “Little Giggles” in Bend, Oregon for approximately four years. She recently pled guilty to eleven counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment and one count of third-degree assault, according to court records.

She was caught lying to parents about being a registered nurse, even though she had no such qualification.

Bend Police had received statements that alleged Neatherlin was seen leaving her house twice  last March while she was supposed to be watching seven children. She was accused by her former boyfriend and a former roommate.

Neatherlin was accused of ditching kids for the tanning salon and has pled guilty. Prosecutors are seeking a 35-year prison sentence.

The children who had been left in her care during those excursions had the sleep aid melatonin in their systems, according to a sentencing memo.

Neatherlin had been telling parents they couldn’t pick up or drop off their kids between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Police checked Cross Fit and Tan Republic records to find that’s when she would leave the house, hours she referred to as “nap time.”

The Bend Bulletin also reports that a child in Neatherlin’s care was once sent to a Portland hospital with multiple head injuries and that she admitted to overheating bottle of milk, giving a young child burns.

Since her arrest last March, Neatherlin had approached other inmates and asked them to claim they had worked for her. She also wrote letters to former inmates asking for bail money and promised to pay them from offshore accounts worth “a lot of money,” according to the sentencing memo.

Neatherlin has also been charged with theft and identity theft while in jail for endangering children.

Update: Neatherlin was sentenced for 21 years.
