Celebrating Women’s History Month – the women who can fly

On March 29th, astronauts on the International Space Station are going to conduct the first ever all female space walk.

Anne McClain and Christina Koch will take a space walk about 240 miles above earth’s surface. NASA spokeswoman Stephanie Schierholz pointed out that women will also be at all controls. Mary Lawrence will be lead flight director, and Jackie Kagey will be the lead spacewalk flight controller.

NASA selected its first female astronaut in 1978 , and now women make up 34% of astronauts.

It’s been 35 years since the first female, Russian cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya, who was the second female astronaut, became the first woman to walk in space in 1984 while testing a repair method.

These four women deserve to be celebrated during the month dedicated to women.
