The month of February is celebrated as Black History Month. Black History month isn’t the only time where African Americans should be acknowledged for their accomplishments; they should be recognized all year long. The purpose of designating February as Black History Month is to focus, honor, and appreciate the influences and accomplishments made by African Americans. In honor of Black History Month, Michelle Obama deserves to be celebrated.

Michelle Obama is the first African American First Lady of the United States. But, she is also a daughter, mother, wife, lawyer, activist, and voice for the people. Obama made an influence on other people’s lives far before she stepped foot into the White House.

In her early life, Obama was an intelligent and bright child. She used her education and determination to get into Princeton University and eventually Harvard Law School. After several years of studying and pursuing law, she found her true calling in pursuing a career in public service. 

With a passion for public service, Michelle Obama has led her life with the intention of helping others. Michelle ended up working with the city of Chicago to help better its community. Her efforts in Chicago resulted in helping create a nonprofit leadership-training program that prepares youth for public service, acted as assistant commissioner of planning and development for Chicago, and developed the University of Chicago’s first community-service program.

Michelle Obama’s compassion and love for others carried over into the White House where she served as the First Lady. She continued to be a voice for the unheard and used her power for good. As the First Lady of the United States, Michelle became a role model for women and an advocate for poverty awareness, higher education, nutrition, supporting military families, helping children lead healthier lives, and helping with international adolescent girl’s education. Movements such as Let’s Move, Joining Forces, Let Girls Learn, and the Reach Higher Initiative were created and pursued by Michelle during her terms.

Michelle’s accomplishments have positively impacted and affected the lives of countless Americans. Not only her actions, but her words as well. Michelle has stated to the public, “Don’t be afraid. Be focused. Be hopeful. And be empowered”. Michelle’s determination, positivity, and hope undoubtedly makes her an influential role model.

Michelle Obama should continue to be recognized and honored for her accomplishments as well as celebrated throughout Black History Month.
