On Thursday September 10th, 2015, the Flight 93 Memorial was opened to the public.  Flight 93 was the only plane that did not reach its intended target on September 11th, 2001.  Presumably, the flight was headed towards either the U.S. Capitol or the White House.  However, a handful of courageous passengers overtook the cockpit and crashed the plane before it reached Washington D.C.

The memorial stands at the crash site near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  The building consists of various thoughtful exhibits.  When walking through the memorial, visitors can experience the chronology of events leading up to the plane reaching its final resting place.

The visitor complex also includes a large wall filled with the names and pictures of those who lost their lives in the crash.  It also features actual voice recordings that passengers left for their loved ones seconds before the plane went down.

The monument’s opening day comes fourteen years after the tragedy occurred.  Although it is now open to the public, there is one last feature that has yet to be constructed.  The final element is the Tower of Voices which will be 93 feet tall, representing the United Airlines flight number, and made up of 40 wind chimes representing the 40 victims.
