Fejiro Onakpoma, born in 1998, attended Naugatuck High School and graduated in 2016. As a star player on the school’s varsity basketball team, Fejiro helped in achieving many significant wins, including placing 11th place in the state during his junior year.
He joined the Track and Field team that same year to stay in shape for basketball, but his excellence in the sport did not go unnoticed. Fejiro became the Naugatuck Valley League, Connecticut, and New England champion in the triple jump.
Mrs. Leary, his Senior year Human Rights teacher, describes him as a “funny, energetic, hardworking, outgoing, and overall a great kid.”
She praised him for his excellence in sports, how regardless of only joining the track team his junior year, he excelled as soon as he started.
Once he graduated, Fejiro went on to do great things at Southern Connecticut State University, being described as one of the most decorated athletes in the program’s history.
- Named USTFCCCA Indoor East Regional Field Athlete of the Year twice.
- Named Outdoor East Region Field Athlete of the Year once.
- Two-time NCAA Division II Triple Jump National Championship qualifier for the indoor and outdoor season.
- Two-time indoor and one-time outdoor All-American in the triple jump.
- Northeast 10 Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year once. NE10 Indoor Triple Jump Conference Champion and one-time outdoor champion.
- He holds the NE10 Outdoor Conference Championship Meet Triple Jump record at 15.44 meters in 2018.
- Fejiro made the record-breaking jump in his final collegiate competition.
Today, Fejiro is achieving his post-college goals as a talented musician, singer, and rapper. He has released 33 songs and two full-length albums.
Fejiro was a remarkable student who makes NHS proud to this day.
