Early morning on November 6th, Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election. Many women around the country are fearing what a second Trump presidency says for them.
In Trump’s first term as president, there were multiple occasions where he supported decisions that went against certain minorities. Communities like the LGBTQ+, people of color, women, and as such have been directly affected by Trump himself.
Also, during his first term as president, he elected three Supreme Court Justices to fulfill his promise of overturning Roe v. Wade. These three justices, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, all voted in the minority to overturn Roe, which clearly affected women all over the country.
The overturning of Roe v. Wade has turned into state issues but continues and will continue to harm so many people throughout the states and put many women in danger. Taking the right for women to choose between having a child or not will continue to kill women and girls throughout the United States. A woman should never have to base a health decision on what a man thinks is right.
Along with past changes Trump has already made, there are talks about upcoming projects that will greatly affect women everywhere. Project 2025, also known as the Presidential Transitional Project, is a group of new policies to modify the United States federal government and how it runs.
Project 2025 has overwhelmingly conservative proposals that some consider extremely harmful. The project discusses utilizing a law that was passed in the 1870s, the Comstock Act, which prevents abortion medications from being sent through mail. Over the past few decades, the Comstock Act has not been enforced by recent Presidents, but if President Trump is reelected, a second term could be used to enforce this law without any judicial action.
In a prior interview with a past Naugatuck High School student, Jaylen Kinnie-Bethea shares his opinion on Project 2025.
“The fact that it was created solely to promote Trump’s reelection campaign basing pretty much all of their plans and ideas for our government on one man’s belief is telling enough. If you actually read the Mandate for Leadership documents it is genuinely scary rhetoric it calls for essentially the republican reconstruction of our government replacing every department with right-wing politicians. A lot of their plans for this project are just blatantly unconstitutional and it blows my mind they are openly telling us their plans to overthrow the government,” said Kinnie-Bethea.
The unknown can be threatening and terrifying for women. Knowing your personal rights can be taken away from you at any moment under a certain presidency is anxiety inducing.
