After their NVL title win in 2010 the Naugatuck Greyhounds have watched Ansonia win every NVL title since. The Greyhound’s best season since 2010 was the 2014 season, in which they went 8-2 led by senior quarterback Jason Bradley.

After Bradley graduated, sophomore Mike Plasky earned the quarterback job and the Greyhounds finished with a hard fought 5-5 record in 2015. With more experience the Hounds look to improve on the field in 2016.

“Given we were 5-5 we just wanna go out there and win more games,” said senior captain Tyler Deitelbaum.

“A lot of the teams in the NVL were 2016 heavy,” added senior Matt Johnson, “so having more experience this year for our starters will definitely help us improve.”

The Greyhounds worked hard in the offseason and planned to come out strong at home in the opener against Derby. The Greyhounds started the game a little slowly falling down 21-6 going into the half. However the Hounds came out stronger in the second half, scoring 38 unanswered and winning the game 44-21.

“That was huge, it showed us we can stay tough throughout a game and preserve through anything to get a win,” said quarterback Mike Plasky who threw 2 touchdowns in the season opener.

“It was a really emotional and exciting game, we’re going to be tough this year,” said Johnson.

After a good week one victory the Greyhounds went to Seymour week 2 only to lose 48-12.

“Seymour is probably a state championship caliber team,” said Naugatuck’s Athletic Director, Brian Mariano. “They’re loaded with talent.”

They knew it was a tough matchup and the Greyhounds wanted to put the loss behind them and move on to week 3.

Week 3 the Hounds had Torrington at home and it was all Naugy in that one. Torrington received opening kick off only to turn it over which allowed the Greyhounds offense on the field where Plasky was able to find Jalen Datil for the quick score. Naugy continued to roll on as Plasky threw for 3 more touchdowns and ran 2 more in leading the Greyhounds to a 51-0 victory.

After allowing 48 points to Seymour the previous week the defense was a key component in week 3 shouting out Torrington.

“The defense played great. The scoreboard shows that,” said Johnson.

The Greyhounds will look to continue their early success in week 4 against Woodland.

Plasky says, “We just need to come out intense, play like we did [against Torrington] and we should be able to get another [win].”
