Seniors Matt and Shane find themselves at different places in the college admissions process.

Now that December has begun, seniors at Naugatuck High School have started one of the biggest processes of their lives, applying to college. Choosing a school to attend after high school can be the biggest decision made by a teenager in their short lived life. It has been a very exciting experience for some, but also a stressful one at the same time.

In our search of finding high school seniors and learning more about the application process, we realized that many student have finished their common app. However, this doesn’t mean much to some. While interviewing Naugatuck High School senior, Shane Swierbitowicz states, “I’ve completed my common app but I haven’t had the chance to apply to any schools yet.”

During another interview, Matt Wahl says, “I’ve already applied and been even accepted to a few of my schools”.

Seniors are standing in very different position as far as the college process is concerned. This fact also makes the process that much more stressful and overwhelming.

There are many issues that could come up with applying to colleges. One issue that a NHS senior brought to light was that communication between student and guidance counselors is very important. We became aware that this could be an issue for a many seniors. Matt Wahl also stated that, “I feel like this whole process would have been much easier if I had better communication with my guidance counselor”.

Another problem that came up recently was gathering all the information that was necessary for the application. A lot of the students that we talked to found it extremely difficult to get letters of recommendation and other important information needed.

For all, the college application process is stressful, but a major relief when it is complete. Soon seniors will find out if they got accepted to their dream schools, and what their future may look like. Good luck to all the Naugatuck High School seniors and their road to college. Strive for excellence.
