On December 14, 2012, 20- year old Adam Lanza shot 20 children between 6 and 7 years old, and as well as six adult staff members. This was a school not too far away from us in Naugatuck in Newtown CT, called Sandy Hook Elementary School. Today marks the 4 year anniversary of the Sandy Hook school massacre.

Since then a group called the “Sandy Hook Promise” has come up with a big issue that has taken over our country. The members of this group are parents and spouses of the victims in the 2012 massacre. They have produced a video that shows a boy named Evan who is seeking a friend. Evan is shown throughout the video as his relationship with his mysterious friend has him pondering who it really is.

The key issue in the video is something that most viewers will not realize at first. The storyline seems to end well, but when a life changing event is about to happen, this causes viewers to re examine and watch for the signs that were missed. This same issue is what made the Sandy Hook Promise produce a video showing how we miss the signs of others.

Two Naugatuck High School juniors had reactions to this video. Carol Ann Gladstone said after watching the video: “I was kind of in shock because I wasn’t expecting it to be a student, who had happen to be in the background the whole time.

Jillian Ginty had a reaction to the video as well: “When we realized what was happening, we’re so unaware of school shootings. It really highlights how blinded we are. I was focusing on Evan the whole time and thought that when the library was closed, he was going to do something. I didn’t even think of a different person having anything to do with it.”

The Sandy Hook Promise shows how people have to be extra alert in today’s world. On a day like today we stop and reflect on the innocent lives taken on those 4 years ago today. These dangers are still very much hidden and unexpected in our community. This must watch two minute video will have you stop and think about the serious issue we are all facing in today’s world. It is time for all of us to come together to make sure that these tragedies do not happen again.
