President Trump visits Puerto Rico

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump visited Puerto Rico this Tuesday, October 3, to get a first hand look at the devastation from Hurricane Maria and to meet with government officials.

President Trump spoke on the catastrophe in front of top Puerto Rican officials. President Trump started the speech off by praising FEMA Administrator, Brock Long, for his tremendous efforts in Texas, Louisiana and Florida.

“Brock has been unbelievable,” said President Trump.

Ricardo Rossello was also praised by the president.  “Your governor – I’ve heard very good things about him. He’s not even from my party and he’s started right from the beginning supporting us.”

The hurricane hit Puerto Rico hard with winds well exceeding 100 mph and caused over $90 billion in damage and leaving 95% of the island without power. Only about 40% of the island has suitable drinking water and the entire infrastructure on the island has been destroyed.

Trump has sent FEMA, the Navy, coast guard and even the USNS Comfort, a hospital ship stationed in Norfolk VA, to Puerto Rico to help the citizens through the troubled times followed by Maria.

President Trump also waived the Jones Act, which lifts shipping restrictions temporarily so all the supplies could get to the island.

The mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz, and many other Democrats criticized Trump about the administration’s efforts and dealing with Puerto Rico. Some have even referred to Hurricane Maria as Trump’s Katrina. He refutes this.

The president used his stop in Puerto Rico to retaliate.

“I hate to tell you Puerto Rico, but you’ve thrown our budget a little out of whack,” he said. “Because we’ve spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico and that’s fine, we’ve saved a lot of lives.”
