Joaquin Oliver was shot and killed during the Stoneman Douglas mass shooting and was laid to rest on February 17th . His parents disclosed in an interview on a Univision talk show “Al Punto” that their son was buried in a Dwyane Wade jersey.

On Valentine’s Day 2018, a shooter entered the high school and took the lives of 17 people within the school. Oliver was one of those that died. And just a short year ago Joaquin Oliver had received his citizenship to be a naturalized citizen of the United States.

Although he lived in America, friends of his made mention too his passion for civil rights in his home country Venezuela. His heart was forever home, in Venezuela. Proof lies  everywhere from his instagram bio to the awareness and fundraising he did in and out of school.

The young man had a lot to move on to in life. He was involved in the town’s local recreational leagues to complement his love for sports, specifically for the Miami Heat and Dwyane Wade.

“It’s emotional even thinking about that — that his parents felt that burying him in my jersey was something that he wanted,” D’Wade said to CNN.VladTV

“It’s way BIGGER than basketball. We are the voices for the people that don’t get to be heard. Joaquin Oliver may you Rest In Peace and i dedicate my return and the rest of this Miami Heat season to you. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾”

His twitter shots go back to what  Fox reporter, Laura Ingraham said to long time friend of his and former teammate LeBron James –  that he should “shut up and dribble,” instead of using his powerful position in the sports world and the young community to speak about world issues. She believed that LeBron and other players should be seen not heard but the players and the fans know that that is not the case. Players have voices for those that idolize him and the people that aspire to be them, giving them a reason to follow hot button issues or politics.

Wade seems to agree this young man had an aspiring future. He was passionate about all the right things, sports, politics, and genuinely being kind. That was swiftly and unjustly ripped from our world. All walks of life have been affected, from his family, to teachers all the way to professional athletes acknowledging him.
