Bus accident injures youth football players

A charter bus transporting a youth football team crashed early Monday morning in Arkansas while traveling from Texas to Memphis, Tennessee and killed one child and injured more than 40 other passengers, many being children.

The team was playing in Dallas for a tournament over the weekend and it was said the age range of the group was between 8 and 12.

The severity of the injured people was not reported by local authorities. The Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock said it received 24 patients following the crash, and all were in stable condition.

The hospital was able to set up a family center to reunite parents with their children.

Other individuals hurt in the crash went to hospitals in Saline and Pulaski counties to be treated.

Fox 16 News reported that two of the injured people had critical injuries.

The unidentified bus driver was questioned by authorities about how the crash occurred; she replied that she lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to roll off the interstate.

The bus crashed at around 2:40 am on Monday along Interstate 30 near Benton as it overturned and left as many as five people trapped in the wreckage.

The football team was based out of Sherwood Middle School and from the Orange Mound Youth Association. Orange Mound is a historically black neighborhood located in southeast Memphis.

The community rallies around its youth football teams which have the players train to be a part of the very competitive Melrose High School group.

The team’s coach, Tony Huntsman was not immediately reached for comment. The team’s Facebook page advocated that the program’s focus was to mentor and prepare the young boys to play football at a higher level.

“On behalf of all Memphians, our hearts and prayers go out to the Orange Mound children and their families involved in this morning’s tragic bus accident in Arkansas,” Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland tweeted out of sympathy for the team.
