Enjoying Boston

Enjoying Boston

On Tuesday May 3rd, I had the privilege of attending a field trip hosted by Naugatuck High School to Boston, Massachusetts.  The trip was originally only for sophomores, but after few students signed up, the trip was opened to the entire school.

Boston is a beautiful city filled with hundreds of years of history.  From the minute we arrived in Boston, the history embedded in the city became very apparent.

Guiding us through the history was a very kind and comical trolley driver named Kent.  From the minute we boarded his trolley, he made us feel very welcome and wanted nothing more than to entertain us while teaching us about Boston.

He drove us past many historical churches, graveyards, parks, and statues.  Many of the sidewalks that we witnessed were the same brick sidewalks that have been walked on for centuries.

The guide also brought us to the historic Fenway Park.  We witnessed the banners hanging along the side of the stadium listing the name and number of each retired player for the Boston Red Sox.  We also had the opportunity to take a group picture in front of the statue displaying four past teammates; Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr, and Dom DiMaggio.

After the tour was over, we had the opportunity to spend two hours in Quincy Market.  Faneuil Hall is the main building in Quincy Market.  Once we stepped inside, we were overwhelmed with scents of foods from many different parts of the country.  The sides of the building were lined with small food establishments such as a New York style deli, a Philadelphia Steak and Hoagie shop, a Ghirardelli’s, a Starbucks, and many other bakeries and types of foods.

In addition to the many food shops in the market, there are also many clothing stores that take residence in Quincy Market.  There are individual stores such as the Best of Boston, and then there are popular chain stores such as Urban Outfitters and Yankee Candle.  There are also many small kiosks on either side of Faneuil Hall selling anything from clothing to jewelry to candles.

Although it was gloomy and rainy for most of the day we spent in the city, we were still able to appreciate the beauty and history that exists throughout Boston.
