Everyone is talking about “Split”

The new movie Split is all anyone can talk about. From 9-year-old Hedwig to prim, obsessive-compulsive maintenance man Dennis to British Patricia, flamboyant to New York fashionista Barry, James McAvoy brings all these characters to life. His performance showcases such amazing precision and great agility. To be able to play 24 different personalities is really something.

Three high school girls get into a car after a birthday party at the mall. Claire (Haley Lu Richardson), Marcia (Jessica Sula), and Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) had all attended the party. When offered a ride home by Claire’s dad, the girls realize that the man who gets into the car isn’t her dad- it’s Kevin, who sprays the girls to knock them out and brings them to his underground lair.

With multiple visits from Kevin and his varying different personalities, the girls realize that this isn’t just one person they are talking to. The girls have to gradually engage with the different personalities in order to save themselves and get out.

We also get a better understanding of Kevin’s mental state of mind through his daily therapy sessions with Dr. Fletcher, who believes that his multiple personalities is in fact a reflection of the brain’s vast potential rather than a disability.

Split has a variety of plot twists. It twists the themes of horror, action, and, even a little, mystery. Kevin has a mystery personality that nobody knows about; he calls it the “Beast”.

The personality consists of him acting and eating just like a bear would. Although Kevin doesn’t intend to hurt anyone, the personality causes him to do things he would never want to do.

Although some say the movie jumps from place to place and isn’t nearly as effective as it should have been, it was still entertaining and left viewers wondering what will happen next the entire time.

The movie’s most positive quality was the performance by James McAvoy. It is a dream role given he gets to play so many different characters.

Although the movie isn’t as scary as some hoped, it was mysterious and thrilling. Casey Cook plays her part well with trying to figure out a way out and making friends with Kevin to trick him into letting her out.

It is an interesting thriller that differs from many others; however director M. Night Shyamalan’s annoying signatures are sprinkled all over.

Overall, Split is a great movie for those who like mysteries and thrills, but, if you prefer horror, Split is not the movie for you.
