A stunning loss

A stunning loss

The UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has without a doubt been the most hyped up fighter the UFC has seen in a long time after his title winning fight against Jose Aldo. With the title already his, McGregor set out to win a 2nd title; this time in the 155 pound lightweight division.

He was ready to fight Rafael dos Anjos, the UFC lightweight champion for the belt at UFC 196. Unfortunately for McGregor, Rafael dos Anjos backed out with a foot injury two weeks before the fight. This left the door open for the main event of UFC 196. Nate Diaz was who UFC president Dana White thought would be best to fight “The Notorious” Conor McGregor on the night of March 5th.

Nate Diaz came back after a year of not fighting in the UFC to defeat Michael Johnson on December 19th. It was a triumphant return for the veteran, but all eyes have been on Conor McGregor for the past year.

However, this fight was a welterweight fight, which would make McGregor go up in weight. He would have to go from 155 pounds, to around 170 pounds, in just a little over two weeks. This seemed to be no problem for the featherweight champion, as he said “steaks for breakfast, steaks for lunch, and steaks for dinner.”

The fight was set for March 5th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Conor McGregor had all the hype going into this match. Of course it would be different for him fighting in the 170 pound division, but it was clear that the champion was ready to fight.

McGregor came out swinging, landing shots to the face on Diaz early. Diaz had one good takedown, but the first round was mainly dominated by Conor Mcgregor. However, once the second round started, you could see a complete difference in the two fighters.

McGregor was running out of stamina, and he didn’t look like the usual 145 pound champion fighter that we’re used to seeing. Nate Diaz quickly gained the upper hand in the second round. In a desperate effort to regain momentum, Conor McGregor went for a takedown on Diaz that ultimately lost him the fight. Diaz got McGregor in a rear-naked choke and the crowd watched in shock, as Conor McGregor tapped out to the hold. The fight ended late in the second round. Nate Diaz shocked the entire world as nobody thought that the Irishman would ever be defeated.

Conor McGregor was 7-0 in the UFC until this point. He now holds a professional record of 19-3 and hopes to come back after the stunning loss. Although he did lose this fight, he still remains the 145 pound featherweight champion.

Nate Diaz wasn’t surprised about the outcome of this fight. He said he knew that he would beat McGregor. Some even say that Diaz was a bit of a sore winner. However, Conor McGregor took his first ever UFC loss very respectfully. He said that it was a good learning experience for him and that he would be willing to have a rematch with Nate Diaz

Many people have been wondering who “The Notorious” Conor McGregor would fight next. For the most part, everyone thought he would go back to 145 pounds and defend his title against anyone in the featherweight division. Perhaps a Conor McGregor vs Jose Aldo rematch would be a good idea for the fighting Irishman.

However, the UFC fans are going to get what they want. Both Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz agreed to a rematch at UFC 200. Will Diaz get the upper hand a second time? Will Conor McGregor get his revenge on Nate Diaz? These questions will all be answered on July 9th at UFC 200.
